The last time I went on a ‘proper’ summer holiday (we’re talking beach, sun and a constant state of happily mortal) was Thailand in 2014. I went for 2 weeks with a backpack and two gross (but wonderful) boys, and I can safely say I didn’t even think about makeup the entire time I was there. To be honest, I’m not sure I thought of much other than Spy wine coolers and rocks shaped like Ralph Fiennes, but that’s another story for another time.
Basically, my point is that it’s been bloody ages since I’ve had to curate a beach holiday makeup bag. But, in 17 days time, me and Helen are off to Skiathos for a week, and I am SO ready! I wanted to share with you some of my tried and tested holiday staples, along with a few new products I’m excited to try out in Greece. With summer just around the corner, I hope you’ll find it useful wherever you’re off to – from Blackpool to Barbados!
False Lash Effect Waterproof Mascara, Max Factor
A timeless holiday staple, the waterproof formula will see me through everything from pool and sea swimathons to make up melting heat.
Blemish Balm All-in-One Magic Make up, Seventeen
I wanted something light and natural-looking, so picked up this BB cream in ‘medium’ to match my skin when I start to tan. It also has SPF 25 so I’m sun kissed – not sun burnt!
Dew the Hoola Liquid Bronzer, Benefit
I’m new to bronzer, but anything that accentuates my tan is a winner in my eyes. Benefit’s new formula seems so easy to use, so I’m excited to give it a go!
PK Prep Polishing Hair Balm, Philip Kinglsey
This has been my hair saviour since it landed in my Birchbox this month, so i’m trusting it to keep my locks happy all summer long. Come on Philip, we can do this.
High Beam Highlighter, Benefit
I have an inexplicably large number of bottles of this (I think it pops up in almost every Benefit kit, and I have many), so I’ll definitely be sticking one in my makeup bag. It’s super easy to apply and blend, and gives my skin a beautiful glow.
Dandelion Powder Blush, Benefit
Dandelion is my all-time favourite blush. It gives a fresh rosy tint to my cheeks, and complements my skin both in its normal state (pale) and when I’ve been in the sun (not quite so pale).
Translucent Loose Powder, Max Factor
This one goes without saying, really – a good powder is important for hot holidays as it will help to keep shine to a minimum, but I love this particular one because it feels so light on my skin.
Vinosource Moisturising Sorbet, Caudalie
Another product that landed in this month’s Birchbox, this facial moisturiser has an almost gel-like formula which makes it beautifully refreshing. Perfect for restoring moisture after a long day in the hot sun!
Gelly Hi Shine Nail Paint in ‘Rose Hip’, Barry M
Apparently neon colours are supposed to make you look more tanned, but I prefer something a little softer so this perfectly pastel shade is my holiday varnish of choice. The gel formula is really long lasting too!
Hydro Care Lip Balm, Nivea
We all remember to pack sun cream (or at least we should), but our lips are very sensitive and need special treatment in the sun. A lip balm with SPF like this one from Nivea will help to protect them, whilst giving your lips a natural-looking shine.
Tame & Frame Waterproof Brow Pomade, NYX
I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW IN LOVE WITH THIS I AM. I’ll probably do a full review soon, but not only is it super easy to use and makes your brows look amazing, it’s also waterproof which makes it perfect for staying on top of your brow game all holiday.
Matte Finish Setting Spray, NYX
Another new product I’ve added to my collection, this setting spray claims to mattify your face and help your make up last all day. I’ll report back to let you know how I get on!
What are your staples for a holiday make up bag? Have you tried any of the products listed, and if you have, what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
